We can hear her recordings, but the descriptions of her performances in operas are impressive. I will never see her, not even in film. Dammit, I know it wasn't smartphone time, but how come no one filmed her when acting? They say that when she was Violetta, all in her was languor and disease. That when she was Medea, she was all angles and strenght. I see what her Carmen would have been. But why, o why, not one filmed opera with her on it? Argh. I was very young living in SF and a friend took me to a gay bar where they played "CARMEN JONES." He explained that JONES was a bastardization of the Opera CARMEN. Knowing nothing of either, I was overwhelmed by CARMEN JONES, and I thought if this is a rip off of the opera, then the opera must be dynamite. So I went out and bought Callas' Highlights from Carmen and I've never looked back. It was the first opera record that I purchased but certainly not the last.
